Changes of agronomic traits in corn under the effect of S1 recurrent selection for resistance to stalk rot (Fusarium graminearum)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of five cycles of S1 recurrent selection for resistance to Fusarium graminearum, the causal agent of stalk rot, in the corn synthetic NSB. Between 250 and 300 plants from the previous selection cycle were selfed and two weeks later inoculated with a spore mixture of the fungus F. graminearum. The best 18-30 plants were selected and recombined using the plant-to-plant method. In the NSB population per se, the five cycles of S1 recurrent selection for resistance to stalk rot reduced the disease index by 6.00% and stalk lodging by 10.51%$ while the machine-harvestable grain yield and grain moisture increased by 362 kg/ha and 2.65%, respectively. The same trend was observed in the testcrosses.
