Genetic factors influencing leaf size (length, width, area of the first leaf) were studied using reciprocal substitution lines between winter wheat cultivars with a high vernalization requirement (Mironovskaya 808) and a low vernalization requirement (Bezostaya 1), where the presence of different recessive vrn alleles is supposed. In addition to it differences between the effects of individual group 5 chromosomes were established and impact of different sowing dates on leaf area and tiller number was detected. Evaluation of the effect of the lines has shown considerable impacts of genetic factors on leaf area. Relatively scarce occurrence of significant interactions homoeologous group 5 chromosomes x genetic background suggests independence of their effects. Sowing date significantly influences both wheat leaf size and tiller number.
