[Adaptation and biomass yield of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) genotypes in Central Italy [Latium - Umbria]]

This paper presents the results of variety trials carried out during the three year period from 1993 to 1995 in Rome by the Department for Agronomic Techniques of the Cereal Research Institute of Rome and Papiano (PG) by the Institute of General Agronomy and Field Crops - University of Perugia. The trials confirm that kenaf adapts fairly well to the conditions of Central Italy. The average dry matter yield useful for industrial processing represented by the stems was around 18 t ha*[-1) at Rome and 12 t ha*[-1) at Papiano. In particular the late-maturing cultivars provided higher yields especially when harvesting was postponed to mid-October. At this harvest time the best performing cultivars were Tainung 2, Tainung 1 and BG 5238/2 at Rome, and Tainung 2 and Tainung 1 at Papiano, whose yields were always above average and unchanged over the three years. The crops harvested in march did not present any major problem and in any case afforded high yield with a moisture content of about 16%.

La sperimentazione eseguita nel triennio 1993-95 a Roma e Papiano (PG) conferma che il kenaf e' in grado di adattarsi abbastanza bene alle condizioni pedoclimatiche riscontrabili in Italia centrale. La produzione di steli, espressa come t ha*[-1) di sostanza secca e che rappresenta la parte utilizzabile nei processi industriali per la produzione di carta, e' stata di circa 18 t ha*[-1) a Roma e 12 t ha*[-1) a Papiano. Le cultivar a ciclo biologico tardivo sono quelle che forniscono le produzioni piu' elevate specialmente quando le raccolte sono rimandate alla meta' di ottobre. In questa epoca di raccolta i migliori risultati sono stati ottenuti dalle cultivar Tainung 2, Tainung 1 e BG 5238/2 a Roma, Tainung 2 e Tainung 1 a Papiano, con produzioni sempre al di sopra della media e abbastanza stabili durante il triennio di sperimentazione. La coltura raccolta in marzo non mostra maggiori problemi rispetto alle precedenti raccolte ed in ogni caso fornisce elevate produzioni con un'umidita' media di circa il 16%.
