Total concentration and forms of trace elements were analysed in forest soils developed from the crystalline plutonic rocks in the Izerskie Mountains at the area of forest degradation. Markedly increased concentrations of lead, especially in forest litter horizons were found. Zinc, copper and nickel occurred in comparatively small amounts. The results obtained in the study show that the total amount of trace elements in soil genetic horizons depends on the content in parent rock, organic matter input as well as the airborne contaminants. Their distribution in soil profile is modified by strongly acidic soil reaction. The analysis of trace elements form indicates considerable mobility of these elements in the soil profile. The concentrations of heavy metals in soils do not seem to be a threat for natural environment of the Izerskie Mountains
