Seven samples of silage and three samples of grain from maize which was affected by hail were analysed. Maize was affected by hail in dough stage, a few days before the usual period for ensiling. Plants were completely defoliated. Due to defoliation the concentration of starch increased. On the basis of concentrations of lactic, acetic and butyric acid it was estimated that silages were well fermented. Grain of hail affected maize contained significantly more crude fibre and ash than grain of usual maize. Despite statistical significance differences were small and of minor importance for praxis. It was concluded that hail did not markedly affect the composition of maize silage and grain. However, conclusions about the consequences of early autumn hail on maize composition can not be generalised on damage which is caused by summer hail.
