Computer processing of the data on 29 characteristics of farm families, principals/husbands, principals/wives and farms by applying the leader method identified three groups/types of farm families in Slovenia: vital democratic, vital traditional and traditional farm family in decay. Among 780 farm families studied, the types of vital democratic (37.7%) and vital traditional (36.8%) farm families are almost equally represented while there is a bit smaller number (25.5%) of traditional farm families in decay. Among three farm family types there are the highest similarity between vital democratic and vital traditional farm families. But while they have in common their ¯vitality®, they differ enormously in being either ¯democratic® or ¯traditional®. Either of the two characteristics are related to the farm family member(s) taking decision on issues related to the family/household and the farms as well as to the member(s) who are arranging issues related to the family and to the farm in the offices of local self-government or in agricultural co-operatives. Within vital democratic families decisions about common issues are as a rule taken jointly by husband and wife with other farm family members participating. They cooperate also in arranging family and farm issues in local self-government and in agricultural co-operatives. On the contrary, within vital traditional families all decisions are as a rule taken by the principal/husband who also deals with the family and the farm issues at the municipality or in the agricultural co-operative.
