The characteristics of pig farms in Slovenia

The main objective of this thesis was to study the characteristics of Slovenian pig farms, to research the differences among the separate regions, and to establish the effects (area of the cultivated land, available labour, region, location of the farm and household characteristics) on the farm's inventory. Data was obtained by a survey on 730 farms. On pig farms, an average of 11,9ha land is cultivated, where 5,2ha is on lease. 80,1% farms have the land on lease. Most of the pig farms do not specialise in pig production, and for just over a half of them farming presents the main source of income. An average of 24,0 domestic animal units (AU) are kept on the farms (min. 2,99, and max. 150,7 ), where an average of 14,2 AU are pigs (min. 2,7 and max. 150,7). In Slovenia higher pig production concentration is in the region of Murska Sobota and Ptuj, where the number of farms, specialising in pig production is higher, so is the number of pigs. Most farms do not breed a sufficient number of domestic animals to gain the appropriate income (employment of one WU). They breed on average 2,0 domestic AU and 1,3 pig AU per ha of agricultural land.
