Measurement of bulk density and fuel chemical properties affecting flammability of Mediterranean species
1997
Matli, P.
In the first part of the thesis, bulk density of Sarcopoterium spinosum measured by a modified method of pycnometry averaged 13.91 kg per m3. Eight other physical parameters were measured from individual shrubs: specific gravity, fresh weight, maximum diameter, minimum diameter, height, live to dead ratio, proportion of fine fuel and age. Relationships between bulk density and these variables were established with multivariate statistical analysis models. In the second part of the Thesis, DSC methods were used to investigate the effect of the seasonal variation in moisture content and ether extractives on the three endothermic heat sink parameters DH endo, peak temperature and ignition temperature of Pinus halepensis, Thymus capitatus and Querqus coccifera, which are encountered in the typical Mediterranean ecosystems.
