Winter pastures require soils with adequate load-bearing capacity. Regarding soil types, ranker, rendzina, and sandy brunisonic fulfil required conditions. Vertisol, Pseudogley, Gley and bog soil show insufficient load-bearing capacity. Instead of winter pastures folds can be an alternative, if the bearing capacity of the soil is insufficient. In feeding sites and places for cattle to lie, nutrient accumulations increase when the positions of feeding places are not changed and when bedding in places for cattle to lie is insufficient. The energy value of herbage harvested in winter depends on species, harvest date and pre-utilisation. The later use in vegetation period and the earlier the harvest date, the higher is the energy value.
