Production of cmv free propagation material from Banana clones cultivated in Crete
1997
Leventakis, N.
Crete is the only Greek agricultural area, where banana is cultivated for commercial purposes. The entire production is derived from clones with short central suckers, cultivated only under glasshouses. The presence of cucumber mosaic virus infections in Cretan banana cultivations has been reported since 1989. Thus the production of CMV free banana mother plant material, for clones adapted in Cretan cultivation conditions, is of great interest for the banana producers of the island. Eighty-eight banana plants of nine clones grown at the Subtropical Plants and Olive Trees Institute of Chania, Crete, were screened for cucumber mosaic virus by DAS ELISA. Three samples that were considered as possibly CMV infected, were undergone sap inoculation tests to ensure whether they were infected or not. No characteristic symptoms were visible on the index plants.
