The impact of the GATT agreement on the main Greek agricultural products

The GATT agreement established a set of commitments on the market access, the domestic support and the export subsidies aiming at the liberalization of international trade for the benefit of consumers all over the world. Even though these commitments impose a limited elimination of the trade obstacles, in combination with the new CAP which was reformed in 1992, they create a highly competitive environment and therefore a great challenge for Greek agriculture. This study tries to estimate the effects on the producer price level and on the volume of supply in Greece which originate from the GATT agreement, through the reduction of the tariffs, the minimum access obligation and the subsidized exports reduction by volume and by subsidy cost, and the new CAP, for nine of the main Greek agricultural products.
