Induction and exploitation of polygenic variability in lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.)

All the nine mutagenised populations, three each of N-nitroso-N-ethyl urea (NEU), ethylene imine (EI) and gamma rays, showed increased amount of variability over control for different polygenic characters studied in both M2 and M3 generations. The M2 progenies showing higher coefficient of variation (CV) than the corresponding highest CV in control for any of the characters were considered as the mutated progenies, whereas promising progenies were those mutated progenies where mean shifted in the desired direction. In M3 generation, progenies possessing higher mean than the highest in control were considered as promising. Among the mutagens tested, NEU induced maximum variability, highest frequencies of mutated progenies, promising progenies and promising progenies with multiple characters in both M2 and M3 generations, followed by EI and gamma rays. The medium dose of chemicals (0.01%) and the highest dose of gamma rays (20 kR) induced maximum variability resulting in the highest number of promising progenies for almost all the eight polygenic traits. All the characters studied in the present investigation did not respond in identical manner to the mutagenic treatments. [Tutte le nove linee mutagenizzate, tre ognuna con N-nitroso-N-etil urea (NEU), etilene imina (EI) e raggi gamma, evidenziavano un incremento di variabilita' rispetto al controllo per caratteri poligenici diversi studiati nelle generazioni M2 ed M3. Le progenie M2 che presentavano un coefficiente di variazione (CV) maggiore rispetto al CV corrispondente piu' elevato nel controllo per ognuno dei caratteri erano considerate come progenie mutate, mentre erano considerate progenie interessanti quelle in cui la media si spostava nella direzione desiderata. Nella generazione M3, le progenie caratterizzate da una media maggiore rispetto alla piu' elevata nel controllo erano considerate come promettenti. Tra i mutageni saggiati, NEU induceva il massimo di variabilita', le frequenze piu' elevate di progenie mutate, di progenie promettenti e di progenie promettenti con caratteri multipli sia nelle generazioni M2, sia nelle M3, seguita da EI e dai raggi gamma. La dose media di composti chimici (0,01%) e la dose piu' alta di raggi gamma (20 kR) inducevano la massima variabilita', che si traduceva nel numero piu' elevato di progenie promettenti per quasi tutti gli otto caratteri poligenici. Tutti i caratteri studiati nel presente studio non rispondevano nello stesso modo ai trattamenti mutageni.
