The influence of compression wood and microfibril angle on the occurrence of distortion in window frames made of radiata pine (Pinus radiata)

Английский. The influence of compression wood and microfibril angle on the occurrence of distortion in window frames was investigated. A set of window frame components manufactured of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) was examined for the occurrence of crook, bow and twist, and divided into two categories of samples, those with severe distortion, and those with negligible distortion. Ten samples in each category were examined. Small sections of window frames were extracted from the affected areas of the samples in the case of timber showing distortion, and at random for the control samples. Compression wood was assessed by image analysis from scanned images of the end grain, to give a percentage value. Each growth ring was examinedmicroscopically to determine the severity of the compression wood if present and to determine the average microfibril angle in each ring. The microfibril angle gradient across the timber was then calculated. Results indicated that compression wood percent and distribution, average microfibril angle, and microfibril angle gradient, had a significant influence on the occurrence of distortion in these samples. Samples showing distortion altogether had high levels of compression wood, high microfibrilangles, or high compression wood or microfibril angle gradients. On average, samples with high levels of distortion had 15% visual compression wood, an average microfibril angle of 32 degrees, and a microfibril angle gradient of 12 degrees, compared to 7%, 24 degrees, and 7 degrees, respectively for the control samples. Compression wood, where present, was typically of the mild type with intercellular spaces and a highly lignified S2L region in the cell walls of tracheids. For the majority of samples identified as containing compression wood, a highly lignified S2L region in the cell wall was the only anatomical feature present. This suggests that abnormal cell wall chemistry may be a significant factor in determining the dimensional stability of sawn timber and manufactured products.

Немецкий. Der Einfluss des Druckholzanteils und des Winkels der Mikrofibrillen auf Verwerfungen von Fensterrahmen aus Kiefernholz wurde untersucht. Eine Reihe von Profilhoelzern fuer die Produktion von Fensterrahmen wurde auf Kruemmung (der Schmal- und Breitseiten) sowie auf Verdrehung untersucht und daraufhin in zwei Klassen mit starker und geringfuegiger Verwerfung eingeteilt. Zehn Proben aus jeder Kategorie wurden untersucht. Von den verzogenen Rahmen wurden kleine Schnitte an den betroffenen Teilstuecken entnommen, von den Kontrollproben an zufaellig ausgewaehlten Stellen. Der prozentuale Druckholzanteil wurde durch Bildanalyse an gescannten Bildern der Hirnflaechen ermittelt. Jeder Jahrring wurde mikroskopisch untersucht, um das jeweilige Ausmass an Druckholz und den Winkel der Mikrofibrillen zu bestimmen. Daraus wurde der Gradient der Fibrillenwinkel ueber den Querschnitt der Rahmenhoelzer errechnet. Druckholzanteil und -verteilung, der mittlere Fibrillenwinkel und der Winkelgradient hatten einen signifikanten Einfluss auf das Vorkommen von Verwerfungen in diesen Proben. Alle verzogenen Proben hatten einen hohen Druckholzanteil, grosse Fibrillenwinkel oder steile Gradienten. Im Mittel lag in Proben mit starker Verwerfung der Druckholzanteil bei 15%, der mittlere Fibrillenwinkel bei 32 Grad und der Gradient bei 12 Grad. In den Kontrollproben waren die entsprechenden Werte 7%, 24 Grad und 7 Grad. Das Druckholz, soweit vorhanden, war von maessigem Typ mit Interzellularraeumen und einer hoch lignifizierten S2L der Tracheiden. In den meisten Faellen war die stark lignifizierte S2L die einzige anatomische Auffaelligkeit. Die gegenueber normalem Holz stark veraenderte chemische Zusammensetzung der Zellwaende ist wohl der bestimmende Faktor fuer die Dimensionsstabilitaet des Schnittholzes und der daraus hergestellten Produkte.
