Effects of liquid manuring - straw return and mineral fertilization on soil and production of continuous maize (1977-1996) [Zea mays L.]

The results of soil and yield analyses of a continuous maize trial carried out in Legnaro (Padua, Italy) in the period '77-'96 are here reported. The treatments were obtained with a factorial combination of two straw utilizations (removed or returned) and four fertilization modalities (none, liquid manure, mineral fertilisation and the last two ones combined). N, P2O5 and K2O content of manuring and mineral fertilization were respectively 120, 120 e 150 kg ha*[-1). Compared to the control, the grain and straw yield increase obtained with liquid manuring was respectively 17 and 11% less than mineral fertilisation. However, yields of liquid manuring were progressively nearer to the mineral fertilising ones, probably due to the observed greater accumulation of nitrogen in the soil, which, in any case, was not enough to prevent also greater nitrogen losses. Straw return didn't affect the reproduction, even if, at least in the not fertilised treatment, a gradual increase of yields compared to the control was observed, probably due, also in this case, to a certain increase of the soil nitrogen content. However, on the whole, also the straw return caused greater nitrogen losses
