Comparison among different techniques for the application of swine slurry on grassland [Piedmont]

Agronomic utilization of livestock wastes, and of slurry in detail, is the only proposable solution for the disposal of those by-products. That utilization is nowadays loaded by a series of problems linked to: high transport and distribution costs; narrow application period, with the necessity to have adequate storage volumes; emission of odours during and after the distribution; difficult determination of the application rate; concentration of the livestock, which requires (particularly for swine slurries) the distribution on the fields of outside parties. The objective of this research, carried out in 1995-1997, was to study the influence of different systems of slurry distribution and of the traditional mineral fertilization on yield and floristic evolution of a permanent grassland. Pig slurry was applied at the rate of 40 kgNtot ha*[-1) four time in the season: early in the spring and after first, second and third cuts. The slurry was applied with the following distribution systems: broadcast application with baffle plate, band application and shallow injection. The results pointed out that shallow injection (3-5 cm deep) didn't cause remarkable damages to the sward and allowed a forage yield similar to that obtained with mineral fertilization. Forage crude protein content was significantly lower in the case of broadcast application. This application recorded a steady higher ammonia loss rate after the slurry distribution
