Status of micronutrients in the mandarin trees of western hills of Nepal

Four to seven months old mandarin leaf samples were collected from different mandarin growing pockets of Kaski, Syangja, Tanahun and Parbat districts (Nepal) from July to September 2000. Calcium and magnesium as well as micronutrients such as copper, iron and zinc content in the leaves of mandarin were analysed in the soil laboratory of ARS, Lumle. A total of 17 samples from Kaski, 22 samples from Syangja, 17 samples from Tanahun and only one sample of Parbat were collected from four directions of healthy fruit bearing and non-fruit bearing, unhealthy fruit bearing and non-fruit bearing mandarin trees. The data showed that all the mandarin growing pockets except two had very low calcium and magnesium content, which showed that these two nutrients might be deficient in the mandarin orchard of all the four districts. Almost all the pockets of Kaski, Syangja, Tanahun and Parbat districts have sufficient copper, iron and zinc content indicating that these micronutrients are not deficient in the mandarin orchards.
