A GIS based methodology for landscape assessment in the Governorate of Ariana, Tunisia
1999
Jhayder, B.
This research integrates up-to-date techniques, basically Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems for the ecological assessment of the Governorate of Ariana, Tunisia, from the 90ies so forth. NOAA/AVHRR, Idrisi GIS and Grassland GIS were used to build up and process the database, assisted by ancillary data of maps, tables and reports. A temporal analysis was carried out to see vegetation variation from 1992 to 1995. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used as the evaluation parameter. Industrial manpower revealed to have a significant negative correlation on vegetation with an R2=0.57. Density slicing was applied to detect the surface area change of different categories of vegetation. The area surface pertaining to sparse vegetation increased the most, reflecting a typical Mediterranean trend. Then, landscape metrics related to textural analysis were incorporated
