Evaluation of the genetic relatedness of selected clones of Salvia officinalis using RAPD markers and comparison with volatile oil profiles

Selected clones of S. officinalis, originating from Italy and Albania and grown under the same environmental conditions, were examined for the volatile compounds, using static Headspace GC-MS, and for their genetic patterns, using RAPD markers. Volatile compounds of the S. officinalis clones were characterized by high amounts of a-thujone (28.7-49.2 percent), b-thujone (2.4-7.7 percent). 1,8-cineole (3.1-18.8 percent), a-pinene (2.51-10.8 percent), b-pinene (0-22 percent), and camphor (0.86-17.42 percent). Borneol and isoborneol acetate, contrary to what has been previously reported, were almost lacking. Two major chemical profiles could be distinguished: the first was 1,8-cineole-rich, a-thujone-rich and camphor-poor (FI4, TN- 132, ValdaY, TN- 191, Valda A), and the second chemotype was 1.8-cineole-poor, a-thujone-moderate camphor-rich (Skodra, Valda X and TN- 75)
