Integrated Water Management Strategies in Egypt

The demand for water in Egypt is increasing for all uses, hut limited water resources, growing populations and water pollution pose potential threats to the social and economic well being of the Egyptian. Due to recent population pressure, the available land for cultivation has become limited and the irrigation problems have consequently increased. This has motivated Egyptian scientists and engineers to direct more attention to water resources development and management. Two types of policies for water resources planning and management are existed, namely, water development policies and water allocation policies. The objective should be to transform the competition between stakeholders into a form of co-operation that achieves the largest overall revenue with the least sectoral harm. At present, the water supply is almost matching the water demand in Egypt. Future demands provide a major concern to the planning and performance of water sectors. Therefore, the water policy of the Ministry of water Resources and Irrigation mainly depends on three major topics, Implementing Upper Nile projects, Improving water use efficiency and Conservation of water bodies from the effect of pollutants and contamination.
