Preharvest factors on almond (Prunus dulcis) kernel quality
1999
Kazantzis, I.
'Ferragnes and 'Texas' almonds (Prunus dulcis Mill. D.A. Webb) grown in central Greece, were harvested early and late in season (based on pericarp maturation) and stored for 6 months either shelled or in-shell at 5 degree Celcium (80 percent RH) or 20 degree Celcium (60 percent RH). The effects of irrigation, cultivar, harvest time and storage conditions were examined. Irrigation and cooler growing temperatures delayed kernel maturation, increased oil content and quality with an increase in oleic acid and decrease and resulted in minor changes in sugar content and composition compared with low or non-irrigation. 'Ferragnes' almonds were larger, with higher oil content and quality (higher oleic acid content) than 'Texas' almonds. 'Texas' almonds ripen later, having sugar content (mainly higher sucrose content) and oil of lower quality (less oleic and more linoleic acid contents and higher K270 value) compared to early harvested almonds
