Free, but lonely - On the beauty of the extraordinary
2000
Weimann, H.J.
Following an earlier review of trees situated within the communal stand, the author proffers selections of single trees as portrayed in poetry and the arts. Growing up without neighboring trees, whether through human intervention or through mischance, single trees are often perceived as being beautiful. In cultural history, they are more frequently associated with "great men", rahter than exemplary women. Unlike in the case of their beautiful "human counterparts", it is not theirgeneral appearance that is admired, but their rough, branchy and large-crowned shape, which receives notice.
