The risk of introduction of some economically important thrips species (Thysanoptera) to Slovenia

The introduction of the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Perg.) to Europe in the early eighties (it was also discovered ten years later in Slovenia), represents an important entomology event as this thrips became one of the most important greenhouse pest in Europe. Though the importance of this insect decreased in the course of time we still couldn't slow it's spreading in our country. It was also removed from the quarantine pest list. The onion thrips (Thrips tabaci Lind.) is also one of the more important pests found on leek, onion, cabbage and other cultivated plants. The intensive intercontinental and international trade of plant material present an increased risk of introduction of thrips species to Slovenia that, till now, haven't been described yet. The more important species are noted in this paper. We will also show how to detect the pests, stressing the different identification methods that are based upon morphologic and genetic variability of these economically harmful species.
