This study identifies the land cover/use changes of Psilorites Mountain of Crete, Greece between 1961 and 1989 and links them to the dominant human disturbance trends. It determines how landscape patterns have changed between these two periods and how these changes reflect the recently altered human disturbance regimes due to EU policies. It also develops a statistical spatial model using Geographic Information System in order to project land cover/use changes in the future and to foresee the impact of the present policy on the environment. Sequential aerial photographs (from 1961 and 1989) and land cover/use map of 1989 in digital format were to detect the evolution of land cover/use changes between 1961 and 1989. Land use patterns were quantified by: a) mean number, size and edge of patches; b) patch shape based on the corrected perimeter to area ratio and fractal dimension; and c) indices of diversity, dominance, and contagion
