Feeding diets varying in crude protein concentration and ruminal degradability to lactating Mediterranean buffalo cows

Four high-energy TMR (6.7 MJ NE1/kg DM) that varied in CP concentration (170 vs 190 g/kg DM) and ruminal protein degradability(70% vs about 60%) were supplied to 4 Mediterranean buffalo cows between 45 and 165 days in lactation, according to a 4 x 4 Latin square scheme. DM intake (DMI), milk yield and milk characteristics and hematological parameters were evaluated within each experimental period (15 d preceded by 15 d for animal adaptation). DMI randomly varied from kg 21.0 +- 0.9 (diets with CP 190 g/kg DM) to 21.6 +- 1.0 (diets with CP 170 g/kg DM). Milk and FPCM (fat and protein corrected milk) yields, urea and somatic cells count (SCC) were unaffected either by protein level or degradability. The milk urea concentrations were high in every case (always close to 50 mg/100 ml) suggesting that CP content in all the diets was too high for animal requirements. Regarding plasma parameters, only aspartate transferase (AST) values resulted significantly (P0.01) higher as the protein content of diets decreased. Significant differences among animals and/or due to the lactation phase were registered for many parameters. Only for few case the protein level x degradability interaction was significant
