Problems of wood extractives in papermaking
2001
Zule, J. (Pulp and Paper Inst., Ljubljana (Slovenia))
Several kinds of extractive compounds of wood origin, like triglycerides, waxes, steryl esters, sterols and higher alcohols, as well as fatty and resin acids are presented in detail, as they are supposed to cause from time to time serious technological problems in paper production. Most troublesome among them are formation of sticky deposits on papermaking equipment and appearance of dark spots and specks on paper. Likewise, different instrumental analytical techniques for chemical characterization of hydrophobic extractives, which are present in all phases of the process are described and certain solutions for their removal suggested.
