The relationship between forest structure and animal species diversity

The relationship between animal species diversity and environmental characteristics of forests is explored. Structural heterogenety of forests (multi-layered vegetation, gaps, mixture of forest tree species, patchwork of differentage classes, edges) is a condition for high species diversity of the fauna. Dead wood as a resource favours habitat specialists (among) them threatened species. It is questionable if indicate species are the only tool to indicate animal species diversity or specific forest communities; structural heterogeneity and presence of wood might also be valuable additional indicators. Diversity is a correlate - not a prerequisite - for sustainability of forest use.
