Irrigation Water Quality and Nitrogen for Yield and Water-use Efficiency of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Ardhaoui) in the Arid Climate of Southern Tunisia

A field study was carried out on sandy soil in the arid region of southern Tunisia to determine the effect of water quality and nitrogen (N) on yield and water-use efficiency of Ardhaoui, a barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar. Two irrigation water qualities were used: canal water (3.4 dS/m) and saline water (11.7 dS/m). Nitrogen was applied at the rate of 0,60, 120 and 180 kg/ha. Dry matter production was not significantly affected by water salinity. However, barley grain yield was significantly decreased under the use of saline water. The reduction in grain yield was mainly attributed to reduction in the number of spikes per square m, number of grains per spike, and grain weight. Water-use efficiency decreased significantly with increasing irrigation water salinity. Crop yield, yield components and water-use efficiency increased with an increase in N rates. The rate of N at 180 kg/ha was appropriate to obtain good yield and efficient water-use of barley in southern Tunisia
