After the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity, a number of actions for the conservation and the sustainable use of the biodiversity has been launched by policy-makers and researchers. Among these, many actions refer to processes which promote the sustainable management and the forest certification. The related criteria of assessment include the status of forest biodiversity and the human impacts relevant on that. As regards the monitoring of forest biodiversity, connected also with the territory scale, various procedures have been developed and a number of studies related with the approaches of the attribute assessment is still ongoing. The periodical repetition of forest inventories is necessary for the accurate and continuous updating of information and fundamental for checking the biodiversity changes into the natural ecosystems, particularly in the forest. Some of the National and Regional forest inventories recently set up, especially abroad, became the most important information source on forest biodiversity. The study presents a review of the most important initiatives promoted to protect forest biodiversity and of the new most significant monitoring programmes carried out through the forest surveys

A seguito della sottoscrizione della Convenzione sulla Diversita' Biologica, molte azioni sono state intraprese, a livello politico e della ricerca scientifica, per la conservazione e l'uso sostenibile della biodiversita'. Tra queste molte iniziative fanno capo ai processi per la promozione della gestione sostenibile e per la certificazione forestale, che annoverano tra i criteri di valutazione le condizioni della biodiversita' delle foreste e l'intensita' degli impatti antropici che agiscono su di essa. Per il monitoraggio della biodiversita' forestale, in funzione anche della scala territoriale, sono in atto varie procedure e molti studi relativi alle modalita' di valutazione degli attributi sono ancora in corso. L'aggiornamento accurato delle informazioni, reso possibile dalla ripetizione periodica di indagini inventariali, e' fondamentale per il controllo delle variazioni di biodiversita' all'interno dei sistemi naturali e di quelli forestali in particolare. Tra le varie realizzazioni inventariali esaminate a livello nazionale e regionale, alcune, avviate in tempi recenti soprattutto all'estero, sono divenute la piu' importante fonte di informazioni sulla biodiversita' delle foreste. Il lavoro presenta una rassegna delle piu' importanti iniziative a favore della tutela della biodiversita' delle foreste e delle piu' recenti e significative esperienze di monitoraggio della stessa nell'ambito degli inventari forestali
