Defensin expression in tomato and aubergine transgenic plants. A defense strategy against pathogen attack [Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. - Solanum melongena L.]

Английский. Plant defensins are little peptides able to inhibit the growth of a large number of pathogenic fungi. They are usually expressed during seed germination. The expression of some of them can be induced in the vegetative tissues of the mature plant after a pathogen attack. It was demonstrated that transgenic plants expressing constitutively defensins are able to enhance disease resistance (Terras et al., 1995). The aim of this work was to obtain tomato and aubergine plants expressing constitutively defensins. They will be used to evaluate the fitness of a transgenic plant of horticultural interest constitutively expressing antifungal proteins; moreover, these plants will be a useful tool to study the impact of antifungal proteins expressed at high levels on the mycorrhizosphere

итальянский. [Le defensine delle piante sono piccoli peptidi capaci di inibire la crescita di un numero notevole di funghi patogeni. Esse sono espresse di norma nel corso della maturazione dei semi. L'espressione di alcune di esse puo' essere indotta nei tessuti vegetativi della pianta adulta in seguito all'attacco di un patogeno. E' stato dimostrato che le piante transgeniche che esprimono costitutivamente le defensine sono in grado di potenziare la resistenza alle malattie (Terras et al., 1995). Lo scopo di questo lavoro consisteva nell'ottenere piante di pomodoro e melanzana che esprimessero costitutivamente le defensine. Queste piante verranno utilizzate per valutare l'efficienza fisiologica e agronomica di una pianta transgenica di interesse orticolo esprimente costitutivamente proteine antifungine; inoltre, queste piante saranno un utile strumento per studiare l'impatto di proteine antifungine espresse ad elevati livelli sulla micorrizosfera]
