Genetic background effect on germination of su1 maize and viability of the su1 allele [Zea mays L.]

Английский. Maize (Zea mays L.) genetic backgrounds affect survival of the sugary1 (su1) allele and germination of su1 phenotypes. Our objective was to determine the effects of different genetic backgrounds on germination of sweet corn and viability of su1. Three su1 maize populations [Country Gentleman (CG), Golden Bantam (GB), and Stowell's Evergreen (SE)] and three Su1 maize synthetics [EPS6(S)C3 (EPS6), EPS7(S)C3 (EPS7), and EPS10] were crossed. The nine F1 populations were random mated three times. Kernel weight and germination of two phenotypic classes (Su1 and su1) were determined in each generation and in each of the nine populations and su1 gene frequency was calculated. Frequency of su1 decreased linearly through recombinations for all crosses, though the regression was not significant for EPS7 x SE, EPS7 x CG and EPS10 x CG. The coefficients of linear regression were all negative and homogeneous. The coefficients of determination were generally above 0.90. Viability of su1 was highest for EPS10 x SE and lowest for EPS7 x SE and EPS10 x CG. The combination of genetic backgrounds of Su1 and su1 populations differed for viability of su1, being EPS10 (Corn Belt Dent) x SE the most favourable. The reduced germination of su1 kernels explained most of the reduction in su1 frequency on average, but differences among genetic backgrounds were found
