1992 Common Agricultural Policy reform and its impact on Greek olive oil market

The reform of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) adopted in 1992, was aimed at the support and the protection of main agricultural products of the European Union (EU), amongst them the olive oil sector. The present study is concerned with the identification of the impact of 1992 CAP reform EU on the Greek olive oil market. Mainly the impact of the production aid, consunption aid and exports subsidies given in the European Union (EU) respectvely on the Greek olive oil production, per capita, consumption and exports. In the other word, how the Greek olive oil market responds to the 1992 CAP reform. This analysis is realized throughout an econometric model, using equations estimations of greek oilve oil production function, the per capita consumption an the exports. Using annual data for 1962-1999, the estimated equations indicate that the Greek olive oil production responds positively to trhe 1992 CAP reform, by giving production aid to the procedures; the production started to increase and to be stable especially after 1992. The Greek olive oil per capita consumption did not react directly to the consumption aid and the results started only at 1995 were the per capita consumption increased gradually. The Greek olive exports were sharply increased in 1992 and beyond due to the exports subsidies given by the EU. For the Greek oilive oil imports are at a very low level and under the existing Greek policy olive oil imports are restricted in order to protect the domestic olive oil sector. The adopted approach can easily be adapted to any other EU country as well as to the non-EU countries
