Potential of selection for fall armyworm resistance in sweet corn [Zea mays L.]

Английский. Fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)] (FAW) is a major insect pest problem for sweet corn (Zea mays L.) in many parts of the Americas. Knowledge of the heritability of FAW resistance in sweet corn would help breeders to more effectively plan strategies for incorporating resistance into new germplasm. The objectives of this study were to estimate heritability for FAW resistance and predict selection gain in sweet corn. Seven inbred lines and four commercial single cross hybrids of sweet corn, all homozygous for the shrunken-2 (sh2) gene for sweetness, were crossed to Mp708, a FAW-resistant field dent corn line. The F2 populations were subdivided with one half being selected for the sh2 trait and the other half left unselected. Parents and their respective F2 populations were artificially infested with FAW and evaluated for leaf-feeding damage caused by the insect. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.22 to 0.93, depending on method of estimation used. The F2 populations homogeneous for sh2 resulted in higher expected gains in resistance to FAW than the F2 populations segregating for sh2; however, resistance to FAW did not appear to be linked to the sh2 gene

Smith)] (FAW) e' un problema molto rilevante per quanto concerne gli insetti parassiti del mais dolce (Zea mays L.) in numerose aree delle Americhe. La conoscenza dell'ereditabilita' della resistenza a FAW nel mais dolce aiuterebbe i genetisti a mettere a punto strategie piu' efficaci per incorporare la resistenza nel germoplasma di nuova costituzione. Gli obiettivi di questo studio consistevano nella stima dell'ereditarieta' per la resistenza a FAW e nella previsione del progresso selettivo nel mais dolce. Sette linee consanguinee e quattro ibridi commerciali a due vie, tutti omozigoti per il gene shrunken-2 (sh2) per la dolcezza, sono stati incrociati a Mp708, una linea di mais dentato resistente a FAW in campo.
