Diffusion and environmental aspects of soilless growing systems

Soilless growing systems are mainly in use for the cultivation of fruit vegetables (tomato, cucumber, pepper) in greenhouses. The ban of the soil fumigant methyl bromide will stimulate the change to soilless growing in many countries. The systems commercially used are as cheap as possible at which single use of materials (substrate, plastics) is standard. Sometimes more sustainable systems are in use. To increase the efficient use of water, greenhouse technology and soilless growing methods are good options. Heat treatment and UV are most popular (active) disinfection methods in closed hydroponic systems. Slow sand filtration may be a good (passive) alternative, especially as present research proof the ability of the resident microflora to suppress soil-borne pathogens. Besides, the system is rather cheap compared to active disinfection methods. Now, it can be concluded that the disinfection methods are able to change the composition in the microflora of the nutrient solution
