Given that in the growing areas of Reggio Emilia the popular cv Spergola, or Spergolina, has been considered to be cv Sauvignon and that cv Spergolina verde to be Semillon, an ampelographic and genetic study was carried out on cvs Spergola, Sauvignon and Semillon to clear up persisting doubts about synonymy among these varieties. The morphological and biometric analyses showed differences among the three as to the main vegetative (young and adult leaves and shoots) and yield (cluster, berry, seed) organs. While these results strongly suggested that all three differ one from the other, the genetic assays with 10 microsatellites (VVMD5, VVMD6, VVMD17, VVMD24, VVMD25, VVMD27, VVMD28, VVMD31, VVMD32 and VVMD36) evinced their genetic differences and corroborated the initial findings. The combined results thus mean that the name Spergola should be stricken from the list of the Sauvignon synonyms recognised in the National Catalogue of Grape Varieties and registered therein as a variety in its own right. It should, at the same time, be listed among the recommended varieties in the Reggio Emilia province areas, with the consequent changes in the CDO labelling for Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa white wine, in which at present it is indicated as a synonym for Sauvignon and Spergola
