Reproduction of six populations of Pratylenchus spp. from the Mediterranean region on selected plant species

Investigations were undertaken in 1999-2001 to assess the reproduction of six populations of root lesion nematodes, three of Pratylenchus thornei from Italy, Morocco and Tunisia, one of P. neglectus from Italy, one of P. pinguicaudatus from Tunisia and one of P. penetrans from Algeria, on 15 plant species in a glasshouse at 22 +-2 deg C. The numbers of nematodes of three populations of P. thornei in the roots of chickpea, pea, faba bean and durum wheat were larger than those from the remaining plant species. Few nematodes were found in the roots of sugar beet, pepper, eggplant and sunflower. Durum wheat, barley, tomato, French bean and faba bean were very good hosts for P. neglectus. Alfalfa, eggplant, lentil, melon, pea, sunflower and sugar beet were also good hosts and chickpea, pepper and peanut were poor hosts for P. neglectus. Pea, French bean, faba bean, chickpea, alfalfa, peanut and lentil were good hosts for P. penetrans. P. pinguicaudatus reproduced better on faba bean, lentil and pea than on the other plants

[Nel 1999-2000 sono stati intrapresi studi per accertare la riproduzione di sei popolazioni di nematodi delle lesioni radicali, tre di Pratylenchus thornei provenienti da Italia, Marocco e Tunisia, una di P. neglectus dall'Italia, una di P. pinguicaudatus dalla Tunisia e una di P. penetrans dall'Algeria, su 15 specie di piante, in serra, alla temperatura di 22 +- 2 gradi C. I numeri di nematodi delle tre popolazioni di P. thornei nelle radici di cece, pisello, fava e frumento duro erano piu' elevati rispetto a quelli riscontrati sulle restanti specie. Nelle radici della barbabietola da zucchero, del peperone, della melanzana e del girasole sono stati ritrovati pochi nematodi. Frumento duro, orzo, pomodoro, fagiolo comune e fava risultavano buoni ospiti per P. neglectus. Anche erba medica, melanzana, lenticchia, melone, pisello, girasole e barbabietola da zucchero erano buoni ospiti, mentre cece, peperone e arachide risultavano ospiti modesti per P. neglectus. Pisello, fagiolo comune, fava, cece, erba medica, arachide e lenticchia erano buoni ospiti per P. penetrans.
