Water management in soilless cultivation in relation to inside and outside climatic conditions and type of substrate

Английский. Water management in soilless cultivation requires more skills, technology and know-how than soil-based cultivation. This paper deals with the main processes and factors to take into account when one intends to schedule water supply to greenhouse soilless crops. In the first part of the paper, we develop briefly the notion of water use efficiency (WUE) and its application to greenhouse cropping. In the second part, we present the water fluxes in the continuum soil-plant-atmosphere and their respective contribution to the greenhouse and substrate water balances, with special emphasis on the interactions that exist between the substrate, the crop, the outside and the inside climate. These interactions determine the water requirements and water status of the crop, as well as the water status of the substrate. The predictive estimation of water requirements in greenhouse is a prerequisite for establishing the substrate water balance, and its variation with time. The third part treats the different methods that allow an efficient control and scheduling of water supply to the crop, with their respective advantages and limitations. In the conclusion, we stress on the need of integrated horticultural research and development programs that will he able to give the answers that growers and the society are expecting in agricultural water management

итальянский. La gestione idrica delle colture senza suolo richiede piu' capacita' tecniche e teoriche di quelle su terreno. Questa rassegna riguarda i processi e i fattori da prendere in considerazione quando si intende programmare l'irrigazione delle colture senza suolo. Nella prima parte di questo lavoro vengono sviluppati brevemente il concetto di efficienza d'uso dell'acqua e la sua applicazione alle colture in serra. Nella seconda parte vengono illustrati i flussi di acqua nel continuum substrato-pianta-atmosfera, i contributi degli stessi al bilancio idrico della serra e del substrato, con maggiore enfasi alle interazioni esistenti tra substrato, coltura, parametri climatici interni ed esterni. Queste interazioni determinano le esigenze idriche e il "water status" della coltura e del substrato. La stima della richiesta idrica in serra e' un prerequisito per stabilire il bilancio idrico del substrato e la sua variazione nel tempo. La terza parte tratta di differenti metodi (vantaggi e limiti) che permettono un controllo e una gestione efficienti del rifornimento idrico alle piante. In conclusione, l'Autore sottolinea la necessita' di progetti di ricerca e programmi di sviluppo capaci di dare risposte attese dagli agricoltori e dalla societa' in termini di gestione idrica
