Power of QTL mapping experiments based on selection of individuals on phenotypic values of correlated traits

Английский. This paper faces the problem of reducing phenotypic measures in QTL mapping experiments for traits expensive to score. Particularly, the effect on power of QTL mapping designs based on selecting individuals according to their phenotypic values on a correlated trait is analysed. Simulation results show that, for a sire design, power increases with QTL effects, genetic and environmental correlations and the percentage of selected individuals, provided a QTL effect on both traits. Nevertheless, the risk of false detection on the uncompletely scored trait arises if the QTL affects only the totally scored trait. On the other hand, when the QTL affects only the uncompletely scored trait, lower power of QTL detection, compared to a random choice of individuals, is obtained. Thus, the selective phenotyping strategy can be an useful tool to reduce costs to detect QTL affecting traits of expensive measure when a QTL has already been mapped for a correlated trait

итальянский. [Questo contributo affronta il problema della riduzione delle misurazioni fenotipiche in esperimenti di mappaggio di QTL per caratteri ad elevato costo di rilevazione. In particolare, viene analizzato l'effetto sul potere di schemi di mappaggio di QTL basati sulla selezione di individui secondo i loro valori fenotipici su un carattere correlato. I risultati della simulazione dimostrano che, per uno schema relativo a riproduttori, il potere aumenta con gli effetti dei QTL, correlazioni genetiche e ambientali e percentuale di individui selezionati, ipotizzato un effetto dei QTL su ambedue i caratteri. Tuttavia, c'e' il rischio di una falsa individuazione sul carattere valutato in maniera non completa se il QTL influenza solo il carattere valutato completamente. Dall'altro lato, quando il QTL influenza solo il carattere valutato in misura incompleta, si ottiene un minor potere di identificazione del QTL, rispetto alla scelta casuale degli individui.
