A field study was conducted on a typic Udorthent clay-loam soil to determine the effects of a massive application of urban refuse compost on the behaviour of total available heavy metals and their uptake by crops in a corn cultivated soil over a three-year period. During the first year of the experiment, 90 t ha[-1) of compost were applied to 6 plots, while, every year, the remaining sites were treated with mineral fertilization. Soil samples were taken before and 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months after compost application. The compost addition caused a significant and durable increase of the total Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd content in soil. The available heavy metal content in soil increased dramatically 6 months after the addition of compost. After 12 months, each available heavy metal determined in the compost plots decreased considerably and there were no significant differences in Cd, Cr and Ni with respect to mineral fertilized plots. The amount of Cu, Zn and Pb remained significantly higher, but differences between the two theses were very low and tended to diminish over time. Only the first plant production of corn grain after the addition of compost had significantly higher Cd and Pb content compared to the corn grain obtained in the fertilized plots, but the measured values fall within the normal concentration for plants. On the contrary, Cr showed in that year values considered critical for plant growth
