Use of fusicoccin in the early selection of durum wheat for tolerance to water stress [Triticum durum Desf.]

Английский. The use of the fungal metabolite fusicoccin (FC) to induce water stress in durum wheat for the early selection of drought-tolerant genotypes of durum wheat was investigated. The experiments were carried out in a plant growth chamber, using seedlings of two cultivars, Creso and Simeto. Several concentrations of FC [from 10*[-7) to 10*[-5) M] and different modes of application were compared. Changes in the water status of seedlings during the experiments were assessed by measuring variations in fresh weight, leaf water potential, relative water content and transpiration. The results indicated that, under the environmental conditions adopted [20 deg C, 65% RH, 80 micronE m*[-2) s*[-1) continuous illumination], the best simulation of water stress was obtained using cuttings of durum wheat seedlings treated with 10*[-5) M FC solution [6.8 microng ml*[-1)] for at least 24 hours. Simeto tolerated FC-induced water stress better than Creso. This result agrees with previous data from both indoor and outdoor experiments, in which other water stress agents were used

[E' stato studiato l'impiego del metabolita fungino fusicoccina (FC) per indurre lo stress idrico nel frumento duro, ai fini della selezione precoce di genotipi tolleranti la siccita'. Gli esperimenti sono stati effettuati in una cella climatica, utilizzando plantule di due cultivar, Creso e Simeto. Sono stati confrontati numerose concentrazioni di FC [da 10*[-7) a 10*[-5) M] e modi diversi di trattamento. I mutamenti nello stato idrico delle plantule nel corso degli esperimenti sono stati accertati misurando le variazioni del peso fresco, del potenziale idrico delle foglie, del contenuto relativo di acqua e della traspirazione. I risultati hanno indicato che, nelle condizioni ambientali adottate [20 gradi C, 65% di UR, illuminazione continua di intensita' pari a 80 micronE m*[-2) s*[-1)], la simulazione migliore dello stress idrico si otteneva utilizzando talee di plantule di frumento duro trattate con una soluzione di FC 10*[-5) M [6,8 microng ml*[-1)] per almeno 24 ore. Simeto tollerava lo stress idrico indotto da FC meglio di Creso. Questo risultato e' in accordo con dati ottenuti precedentemente in esperimenti in ambiente chiuso o all'aperto, in cui erano utilizzati altri agenti di stress]
