Among the numerous factors causing damage of the tubers, the genotype of the variety and the temperature during harvesting are important. The influence of these factors was analyzed in the studies carried out using the complete randomization method in four replications in the years 2008-2010 under the climatic conditions of Lower Silesia. The subject of the research were Santana, Contessa and Markies varieties, and the thermal factor was modified with harvesting time - morning (7-8) and afternoon (14-15). After 16-hour storage of tubers in the Climate Cabinet (Hot-Box) the damage indicator was determined (according to the IHAR method Roztropowicz et al. 1999) and based on it the loss in the yield of the commercial tuber fraction was calculated. The results of the three-year study indicate that the number and size of damages as well as the losses caused by them were idicator modified by the weather condition, and above all by the temperature. During the harvest carried out at a temperature below 12 degrees C, the damage index was higher for all varieties than in the temperature range of 15-17 degrees C. The factor determining tuber damage and losses was not caused by the genotype of the variety, among the tested varieties the least susceptible to mechanical damage was Markies regardless of the temperature during harvesting.
