Asian aquaculture has grown rapidly over the past three decades, and now represents more than 90 percent of global aquaculture output by volume. Growth of the industry has largely been the result of two factors: intensification through technological advances and increased use of feed and other resources. While growth of Asian aquaculture has contributed to food security, it has also led to negative environmental impacts. Intensifying aquaculture production in a sustainable manner is a massive challenge. This document is the outcome of a regional consultation on sustainable intensification of aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific held in Bangkok, Thailand from 9 to 11 October 2012. Its main objective was to develop a regional strategic policy framework to guide national governments and regional organizations in promoting sustainable intensification of aquaculture in the region.
