Change of subalpine arboreal forests in Kazbegi region over time.
2021
During the last century the birch forest area significantly decreased in the temperate zone worldwide. It has undergone a lot of changes in our country as well. The northern slopes of the Central Caucasus Mountains in Kazbegi district of Georgia were covered by birch forest in the past. However, during the last decades forest area has significantly decreased due to different types of human impact. e.g. fires and uncontrolled cutting of trees. Large forest areas have transformed after degradation to subalpine secondary meadows as pastures and hey meadows. During the last decades, natural reforestation of the birch forest started in the Central Caucasus and the diversity. The aim of our study was to determine how to change subalpine birch forest in Kazbegi district. We estimated degree of damage of birch forest. Results indicate that the differences among different forests are very clear. The natural regeneration of birch forest is apparently in close relation with the global climate change, also the important factor is the reduction of uncontrolled sheep grazing in Kazbegi district.
