Improving the yield of mango clone MA 125 with flower inductants

Mango clone MA 125 which is known to be difficult to flower can be induced chemically using flower inductants. Paclobutrazol was found to be effective in increasing flowering intensity and subsequently yield. The suitable rate of paclobutrazol ranged from 5.0 g a.i. to 10.0 g a.i. Higher concentration i.e. 15.0 g a.i. had an adverse effect on the plant although flowering and yield increased during the first season. The drastic suppression of vegetative growth at this rate reduced flowering and fruit number during the second season. Uniconazole at the rate of 0.5 to 1.5 g a.i. was also effective in increasing flowering and fruiting without affecting vegetative growth. Other chemicals such as ascorbic acid, ethephon and a mixture of Welgro, Manzate - D and 'Cabaryl', although were found effective in increasing flowering, the number of panicles and fruits/tree were very much lower than trees treated with paclobutrazol. Potassium nitrate was not found to be effective for this clone. The time of application of flower inductants is very important to ensure that the flowers are not attacked by anthracnose which can be serious during the rainy period. The suitable time for flower induction is early December so that flowering can take place during the dry period in January i.e. during the natural flowering season.
