Effects of dietary addition of seaweed meal on growth performance, diarrhea occurrence, blood cell composition and biomarkers of gut health in nursery pigs

A total of 96 nursery pigs (10.1 not equal 1.8 kg, PIC L337 x C24 were used to determine the effectof dietary addition of seaweed meal on growth performance, diarrhea occurrence and gut health biomarkers. Pigs were randomly allotted to the following treatments: 1)negative control (Diet 1); 2)Diet 1 + 35 ppm tiamulin and 400 ppm of chlortetracycline HCI (Diet 2; AGP); and 3) Diet 1 + 2% seaweed meal (OceanFeed Swine, Ocean Harvest Technology, Galaway, Ireland). The seaweed meal was added to the diet at the expense of yellow corn. Each treatment had 8 replications and 4 pigs per pen. Feeders and pigs were weighed at the end of each phase to calculate for ADG, ADFI, and F/G. Diarrhea score of each pen were assessed visually each day. Blood samples were collected on d 23 to measures serum concentration of pig-MAP and I-FABP, which are biomarkers for gut inflammation and mucosa cell damage, respectively. Overall (d 0 to 24), pigs fed with the diet with AGP and seaweed meal had greater (P0.05) ADG and ADFI and were heavier (P0.05) than control pigs. Diarrhea score were the least (P0.05) in pigs fed the diet with seaweed meal all throughout the study compared to pigs fed the AGP and negative control diets. Serum pig-MAP and I-FABP concentrations of seaweed meal improved nursery growth performance and reduced diarrhea incidence bu no effect on gut integrity. Seaweed meal can effectively replace AGP in preventing postweaning diarrhea.
