Soil quality and productivity under grassland, conventional and conservation farming in Ligao, Albay, Philippines

The impacts of rainfall, land use systems and slope on soil quality and productivity under three land use systems were assessed in two cropping seasons of corn. The highest soil loss was observed in conventional plots, with 56.365 Mg ha 'year' which was above the soil loss tolerance level (= 10 Mg ha' year'). Soil loss in conservation and grassland plots were 4.892 Mg ha year' and 0.083 Mg ha 'year', respectively, which were both below the soil loss tolerance level. In terms of soil depth, the soil loss in conventional plots was 3.6 mm ha' year; conservation plots, 0.3291 mm ha 'year', and grassland, 0.0035 mm ha 'year'. OM and NPK levels were significantly higher in the downslopes as compared to those in the upslopes in all the plots. Conventional plots showed the highest OM and NPK loss due to high quantities of eroded soil as compared to those of the conservation plots and grassland; with grassland showing the lowest. Hedgerows in the conservation farming plots mitigated the soil loss. Conservation plots had higher corn yields than those of the conventional plots in two cropping seasons.
