Content analysis of coverage of high priority environmental issues: the case of the Department of Science and Technology's S and T Post magazine

The study aims to analyze the coverage of articles with high priority environmental issues published in the S and T Post magazine from 2006 to 2017. Coverage was operationalized in terms depth, locality, focus, levels of observation, placement, space allocation, sources, tone, and treatment. Content analysis was used in the study. A software (AntConc 3.5.2) was used as a tool for the analysis. Frequency count and percentages were used to determine the coverage. Findings showed that a total of 1,813 articles were published by the magazine in 2006-2017. Of this, 72 articles (3%) had environmental issues as content, but only 18 (1%) dealt on high priority environmental issues. Format of articles covered in the coverage indicated that they were mostly straight news reporting, of national significance, focusing mostly on water and energy, and using second hand observation. Articles with high priority environmental issues occupied left/right sections of the page, with space allocation ranging from 1%-12%. Majority of the articles used locally sourced perspectives of the author or the agency with its source types often employing both documentary and human sources. The preferred tone of the articles was positive. The major treatment of articles with high priority environmental issues was the traditional news style. Based on the gaps that emerged from the analysis, a number of guidelines pertaining to the content variables were proposed to enhance the coverage of high priority environmental issues.
