Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an economically important crop in the Philippines. The production practice of eggplant is affected by climate change. Previous studies of eggplant genotypes under drought were done in the Philippines. However, studies on waterlogging of eggplant are limited. The study assesses variation of eggplant genotype for plant and root traits such as net plant height, leaf area, total, lateral and basal root lengths and volumes, and total root surface area under drought stress and waterlogged conditions at vegetative and reproductive stages. Variation in the LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARY 16/ASYMMETRIC LEAVES 18 (LBDI6/ASL18), a gene identified to play a role in lateral root growth, was also investigated among eggplant genotypes. Results showed net plant height and root length were affected by the drought treatments. All traits were smaller in waterlogged treatments compared to the control. Basal root length, total, lateral and basal root volume, and total root surface area varied among genotypes under both drought and waterlogged stresses at the reproductive stage. Differences between treatments and genotypes were detected in the yield for both drought and waterlogged treatments. Sequencing of the LBD16/ASL18 gene in eggplant showed variation among genotypes. Assembly of the sequenced gene portions showed similarity to around 250 bases in LBD containing domain protein 16 compared to other species.
