Assessment of maternal nutrition
1978
Abstract: Nutritional status during pregnancy can be carefully assessed only by considering dietary intake, clinical factors, genetics, family, and social environment. Spotting individuals at high nutritional risk is aided by knowing the characteristics contributing to potential problems: adolescence, repeated frequent pregnancies, medical difficulties, economic deprivation, drug or alcohol abuse, 20% over- or under- weight and diet therapy or fads. Since many signs of nutritional inadequacy appear in exposed parts of the body, few diagnostic tools are necessary. One very useful aid is the color-coded Eating Habits Questionnaire, which scores intake by food group; for example, iron is purple and vitamin A sources are gold. Daily intake of each food is recorded and the values for each color are added to obtain the weekly amount ingested.
