Discusses and gives the Committee's conclusion on the following issues: defining iron deficiency anemia and the effects of different criteria on its estimated prevalence; determining the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia and considering its public health importance; developing methods for delivering iron in children and women; and determining the efficacy and safety of different interventions. Includes recommended guidelines for preventing and treating iron deficiency anemia in infants, children, nonpregnant women of childbearing age, and pregnant women. Also includes recommendations for research.
