Nutrition in the management of gastrointestinal disorders

Abstract: Gastrointestinal diseases accompanied by malabsorption, nutritional deficiencies and the need for nutritional support often present a major therapeutic dilemma for dietetic practitioners. During the last 25 years improved means of nutritional support -- enteral and parenteral -- make it possible to manage some of the more difficult cases, but they also present additional metabolic and nutritional complications. This issue presents current views of the various nutritional strategies used in treating gastrointestinal disorders, particularly those accompanied by malabsorption including short bowel syndrome, lactase deficiency and gluten-induced enteropathy. A wide range of nutritional problems may be seen in patients of all ages with inflammatory bowel disease and dietary management is commonly used in treatment. Diet therapy for peptic ulcer disease, once based largely on folklore, is now based on scientific evidence which justifies its rational use. Practical dietary interventions for this population are discussed.
